There are positions at the top of the court that need to be filled,  Oxtoby said.  The Supreme Court of Appeal has lost an enormous amount of experience due to judges retiring over the last few years. Its really important for that court to get new judges in. Oxtoby also noted that the courts are facing significant case backlogs, adding that while this weeks appointments wont fully resolve the issue, they are a crucial step in addressing the workload.
