ITALIAN archaeologists have found the world's oldest perfumes on Cyprus.( x, [. a0 q: P, f J

The perfumes were scented with extracts of lavender, bay, rosemary, pine or coriander and kept in tiny translucent alabaster bottles. % S3 f+ L3 D; n5 n* {0 l# Y( Z2 W! F( s( i6 v
The remaining traces found at Pyrgos, in the south of the island, are more than 4000 years old.6 F% ~+ b7 C" }- N8 b u

At least 60 stills, mixing bowls, funnels and perfume bottles were perfectly preserved at the site, which had been blanketed in earth after a violent earthquake about 1850BC. ) W6 v G1 R" u8 |0 w" _0 h6 s% T1 r- g# {8 n' o0 U
The abundance of perfumes fits well with Cyprus' mythological status as the birthplace of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love.% h6 D# Q' _5 @5 n: ?
